The November 8 Anambra State governorship election will serve as the first major test for Joash Amupitan, the newly appointed chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as he steps into the demanding role of restoring public trust in Nigeria’s electoral system.

Appointed by President Bola Tinubu in early October and confirmed by the Senate two weeks later, Amupitan has had little time to settle into office before facing an election that could either make or mar his reputation.

"It is also an opportunity for the electoral umpire under the leadership of Prof Joash Amupitan, SAN, to prove to the world that it has turned a new page, and that the integrity of our election would not be sacrificed for the satisfaction of the ruling party,” ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar posted on his X on November 2.

Atiku, who is a leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), might have spoken like a politician, but he captured the minds of several Nigerians.
